FOSP Grant Program

Friends of Stead Park, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established to advance the charitable intent of Robert Stead's bequest by supporting opportunities that enhance the well-being of children in Washington, DC. Rooted in the history of Stead Park and its founding purpose as a playground for the children of the District, the organization seeks to ensure that all children - regardless of neighborhood of income - have access to safe spaces, enriching experiences, and joyful childhood moments.

In addition to maintaining and improving Stead Park in partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation, Friends of Stead Park awards grants to nonprofit organizations serving children throughout Washington, DC, with particular attention to children and families facing economic hardship or limited access to opportunity.

Through its grant making program, Friends of Stead Park supports programs and services that promote children's development, dignity, and connection. This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Educational, enrichment, and arts programming

  • Recreational and athletic opportunities

  • Access to transportation, equipment, or materials that enable participation

  • Basic needs of supportive services that enhance a child's well-being

  • Programs that foster joy, belonging and community connection

Priority may be given to:

  • Organizations serving children in historically underserved communities or those facing systemic barriers to opportunity.

  • Programs that incorporate meaningful use of Stead Park as a site of programming, gathering, recreation, or community-building, consistent with the Park's founding purpose.

By stewarding its resources with integrity and care, Friends of Stead Park seeks to expand equitable access to safe, supportive, and empowering experiences for children across the District of Columbia.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Organizations must have a 501(c)(3) nonprofit status as determined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

  • The program must serve children living in Washington, DC.

  • Ability to provide reports of how the funds were used.
